IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) — The University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital has been named the best in Iowa in rankings published by U.S. News & World Report Tuesday.
The hospital is listed among the nation’s best in five specialties in the Best Children’s Hospital Rankings for 2021-2022. U. S. News & World Report ranked the top 50 centers in each of these 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology & gastrointestinal surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology & neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology & lung surgery and urology.
The Stead Family Children’s Hospital, which is Iowa’s only nationally ranked children’s hospital, ranked in the following areas:
- 25th in Neonatology
- 35th in Pediatric Orthopedics
- 41st in Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology
- 42nd in Pediatric Nephrology
- 50th in Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery

New this year, the rankings feature expanded offerings that include state rankings and multi-state regional rankings. On top of being ranked #1 in Iowa, The Stead Family Children’s Hospital is ranked #15 in the Midwest Region, which includes Illinois, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
The annual Best Children’s Hospitals rankings , now in their 15th year, are designed to assist patients, their families and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive cares. The Best Children’s Hospitals methodology factors in patient outcomes, including mortality and infection rates, as well as available clinical resources and compliance with best practices.
