PASSING OF RICE SCIENTIST
Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, renowned for developing the first hybrid rice strain that relieved countless people of hunger, died of organ failure at 91 on Saturday.
Yuan had been under medical treatment after suffering a tumble in March when conducting research at a seed-breeding base in Hainan Province.
DECEASED SURGEON
China’s top hepatobiliary surgeon Wu Mengchao, known as the “father of Chinese hepatobiliary surgery,” passed away at 99 on Saturday.
Wu, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, established a unique system of liver surgery in China and devoted himself to saving people’s lives for nearly eight decades. He continued working into his 90s, seeing patients and performing operations.
MARS ROVER
China’s first Mars rover, Zhurong, has driven down from its landing platform to the Martian surface, the China National Space Administration announced on Saturday.
