Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Warren Buffett has mused, ‘If you’ve been playing poker for half an hour and you still don’t know who the patsy is, you’re the patsy.’ When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Kimco Realty (NYSE:KIM), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit is not necessarily a social good, it’s easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital – but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is Kimco Realty Growing?
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, Kimco Realty’s EPS has grown 32% each year, compound, over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we’d expect shareholders to come away winners.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. To cut to the chase Kimco Realty’s EBIT margins dropped last year, and so did its revenue. That will not make it easy to grow profits, to say the least.

Are Kimco Realty Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$9.0b company like Kimco Realty. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$346m. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.
Should You Add Kimco Realty To Your Watchlist?
For growth investors like me, Kimco Realty’s raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. Further, the high level of insider ownership impresses me, and suggests that I’m not the only one who appreciates the EPS growth. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research. So the answer is that I do think this is a good stock to follow along with.
